PHP is a step between residential and outpatient care. You get structured treatment most of the day, with medical and psychiatric oversight, then practice your new skills in the real world each evening.

Who it’s right for

A good fit if

  • You’re finishing residential treatment
  • You need more support than IOP offers
  • You’re medically stable and past acute withdrawal
  • You have a safe, sober place to sleep

Consider another level if

  • Withdrawal still needs medical care (detox)
  • Home isn’t safe at night (residential)
  • You need to keep working full time (IOP)

A typical PHP day

  3. LunchOften provided on site.
  4. Individual therapy or psychiatryMedication management and one-on-one sessions during the week.
  5. Process group or family sessionReal conversations about what’s hard right now.
  6. Head homeEvening support meeting and time with family.

PHP and sober living

Many people in South Florida pair PHP with a recovery residence. That can work very well, as long as the home is certified and independent of the program’s billing. Read our sober living guide for the questions to ask and the red flags to avoid.

What’s the difference between PHP and IOP?

Intensity. PHP is usually 20 or more hours a week, about a full workday most days. IOP is usually 9 to 19 hours a week, often a few hours on weekday mornings or evenings.

Can I work while in PHP?

Usually not full time, since PHP runs most of the day. Many people take medical leave and step down to IOP when they go back to work.

Where do people live during PHP?

At home if it’s safe and supportive, or in a certified recovery residence. In South Florida, PHP with sober living is a common combination. Make sure the residence is certified.
