Marijuana addiction treatment

Weed is legal for medical use in Florida and easy to get, but that doesn’t mean it can’t take over. If you can’t cut back, or it’s costing you more than it gives, treatment helps, and it’s usually outpatient.

Today’s cannabis is much stronger than it used to be, especially vapes, dabs and concentrates. Most people who use it don’t develop a disorder, but a meaningful share do, and the risk is higher for people who start young or use daily.

Signs of cannabis use disorder

  • Using more, or more often, than you meant to
  • Trying to cut back and not being able to
  • Needing more to feel the same effect
  • Using to get through the day, sleep or handle anxiety
  • Losing interest in work, school, people or things you used to enjoy
  • Irritability, poor sleep and low appetite when you go without

What quitting feels like

  1. Days 1–3Starts

Irritability, anxiety, restlessness and trouble falling asleep.

  2. Days 2–6Peak

Low appetite, vivid dreams, mood swings and cravings.

  3. Weeks 2–3Settles

Most symptoms fade. Sleep can take a little longer to normalize.

Cannabis withdrawal isn’t dangerous, but it’s uncomfortable enough to send people back to using. Planning for sleep and stress in the first two weeks helps a lot.

Treatment that works

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to handle cravings, stress and boredom differently.
  • Motivational enhancement therapy, a short approach that helps you clarify your own goals.
  • Contingency management, which rewards progress.
  • Treatment for anxiety, depression or ADHD, which often travel with heavy cannabis use.

For parents of teens and young adults

The developing brain is more sensitive to THC, and early heavy use raises the risk of dependence and, for some, psychosis. Stay curious rather than angry, ask about what they’re using and why, and look for programs with experience treating adolescents and young adults. Our family guide has more on starting the conversation.

See all questions

Can you really be addicted to marijuana?

Yes. Cannabis use disorder is a recognized medical diagnosis. Signs include failed attempts to cut back, cravings, using despite problems and withdrawal when you stop.

What is cannabinoid hyperemesis syndrome?

It’s a condition in some long-term, heavy users that causes cycles of severe nausea and vomiting, often relieved by hot showers. It usually goes away only after stopping cannabis. See a doctor if you have these symptoms.

Do I need inpatient rehab for weed?

Rarely. Most people do well with outpatient counseling or an intensive outpatient program. More intensive care can help when there are other substances or mental health conditions involved.

Is CBD the same?

No. CBD doesn’t cause the high that THC does. But many products are poorly labeled, and some contain THC.
